Fragile X Syndrome

Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is a genetic disorder that results from mutations in a gene on the X chromosome and is the most commonly inherited form of developmental and intellectual disability. People with FXS can have behavior challenges, distinctive physical features, speech and language difficulties, sensory issues, and obstacles with their ability to learn. Females are less likely to inherit FXS, and when they do, symptoms tend to be less severe. Many individuals diagnosed with FXS meet criteria for a diagnosis of ASD, with the estimated prevalence of ASD in FXS being approximately 50% for males and 20% for females (Bailey et al. 2008; Clifford et al., 2007; Kaufmann et al., 2017). This presentation will provide a broad overview and general information about FXS, to include causation, symptoms, physical characteristics, diagnosis, comorbid medical conditions and issues, along with behavioral representations. Case studies will be offered to highlight different presentations of the genetic disorder. Current treatment recommendations and research on promising treatments will be provided. Participants will receive a tool to aid in the unique characteristics of FXS along with links to resources for support. Learning Objectives: -Participants will be able to identify the unique physical characteristics, medical issues, behavioral issues, and co-morbid psychiatric conditions associated with Fragile X Syndrome. -Participants will be able to identify recommended treatment strategies to support individuals diagnosed with this genetic disorder.
